Chapter Six

Sterling

I sit down on one of the chairs. We’re in a cafe close to the courthouse.

Today will be the first hearing about Maddy and we’ll finally see her for the first time in almost a week. I can’t believe how long it’s taken. A week.

A week without my girl, without any contact. Next to me, Wilder is holding my hand tightly and opposite us are Lilly and Sarah. They picked us up from home, they didn’t want to let us drive here. Which was probably a good idea. I don’t think that driving will be possible right now.

Wilder’s parents will arrive soon, and so will mine, hopefully. We’re all here today, all hoping that everything will turn out well, but I have no faith in that. None at all.

If it had been easy, Logan’s parents wouldn’t have been able to get custody over Maddy in the first place. That wouldn’t have been possible. But it still happened. They were still able to. So now… now we have to fight them. Prove that she belongs with us.

My parents open the door to the cafe, quickly spotting us and coming over. My first instinct is to let go of Wilder, but I know that’s no use. I know that that won’t solve anything and his closeness is what’s keeping me together for now. This is the only way we can do this.

“Sterling.” Dad comes over, opening his arms for a hug.

I give him a quick hug, then also hug Mum. “Thank you for coming.” The look in Mum’s eyes tells me that she saw the way I was holding onto Wilder and she doesn’t know what to think of it.

Well, I don’t care right now. I don’t care what she thinks of it. None. I need Wilder at my side, he’s my mate and that’s how I’ll be.

Before we even sit down, Wilder’s parents also arrive and they hug us both. Wilder’s Mum hands me a small box. “Don’t open this until everything is over, okay?”

She looks at me and just the kindness in her eyes makes tears well up in mine. “Hush. Don’t cry. We’re all here for you. We’re not letting them get away with this.”

Then she turns to my parents. “You must be Sterling’s Alpha and Omega. How nice to meet you.” She hugs them both, then she gives a hug to Lilly and Sarah. “So, I guess this is everyone?”

Wilder nods next to me. “Yeah.” We’re meeting our lawyer at the courthouse itself.

“Good. Remember that you’re not alone. We’re here with you and we’re going to fight.” Wilder’s Mum is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

She may be a Beta, but I can see where Wilder got his passion and his protectiveness from.
